RS485 with the Modbus protocol is the workhorse of industrial metering communication: a robust two-wire bus that daisy-chains dozens of meters and devices over long cable runs into BMS, SCADA, and energy monitoring platforms.

How to Choose
Confirm your platform speaks Modbus RTU, plan the bus topology (one continuous chain, terminated at both ends), and give every device a unique address. Add an RS485-to-USB or Ethernet gateway where the data needs to reach a server.
